Swimming with Jellyfish

Sounds spooky! Watch out!

We went for a swim at the beach nearby and we kept feeling something slipping through our fingers as we would swim. When we stopped to have a look and figure it out, we discovered we were surrounded by hundreds of jellyfish!

But don’t worry, these are simple Comb Jellyfish. They’re not poisonous at all. When you pick them up, they actually look a lot like skinned grapes.

While we were catching them and putting them in a bucket, we noticed that they are bio-luminescent! They would let off a green light show along the sides of their bodies while they had their tentacles out.

We’ve never seen this before, so we were pretty amazed, and we are accustomed to the half moon jellyfish (also safe to handle).

Our son got to swim in the ocean for his first time as well, and tomorrow, he’ll be eleven months old. Always good to start them early, especially when you live on an island!

With the heat getting up into the 30’s (Celsius) now on a daily basis, we’ll be finding as many beaches as possible.

I’m sure that at some point, we’ll be talking about the jellyfish that we had to run away from, but hopefully not anytime soon!
